PASO

The Pre-Admission Summer Opportunity program gives prospective ASL students a chance to prove their talents.

Some applicants may be invited to participate in our Pre-Admission Summer Opportunity program. We have designed PASO for students who have the potential to succeed as law students and lawyers, but whose skills and talents may not be reflected fully by traditional measures such as LSAT scores and undergraduate performance.

PASO provides participants an opportunity to experience law school coursework and faculty an opportunity to evaluate participants' performance to assess their ability to succeed in law school. PASO participants who successfully complete the program may be offered admission to the entering first-year class in August of the year in which they complete the program or the following year, depending upon availability.

PASO is a four-week program. The first three weeks consist of home study. The last week takes place on ASL's campus in Grundy, Va. A detailed calendar, including deadlines for written assignments, will be e-mailed to invited students along with the PASO invitation.

Student Learning and Testing Enrichment Center (SLATE) is a collaborative effort involving law school administration, faculty, and students that assists students in developing and enhancing critical skills necessary for success in school, on the bar exam, and as an attorney. It consists of several components, including a required first-year course for all incoming students that focuses on skill development; voluntary skill-development workshops for second- and third-year students; a writing center; tutoring and mentoring programs; and a bar preparation and support program for third-year students. Professor Tommy Sangchompuphen is the SLATE director and also the Assistant Dean of Student Learning and Outcomes.
