How does ASL give back to the community?

Community Service

Some law schools give lip service to the notion of community service. At ASL, building exceptional lawyers who are also exceptional citizens is one of our hallmarks.

Community Service Requirement

ASL is so passionate about community service that our students are required to complete 25 hours of service each semester. They complete this requirement willingly, as ASL attracts students who see beyond themselves and become leaders in their community, now and in the future.

While students may structure their community service commitment to meet their own schedules, ASL does schedule one afternoon a week for students and faculty to engage in community service activities.

Community Service Projects

ASL students may propose their own project or choose from a wide range of more than 60 projects, including such law-related ones as:

  • Volunteering for the local CASA program as court-appointed special advocates for abused and neglected children
  • Teaching a conflict resolution program in area elementary schools
  • Engaging in property research and mapping through a municipal project
  • Working as courtroom observers and reviewing documents for a gender-bias study of the Virginia state court system
  • Providing assistance to Commonwealth attorneys, public defenders, and Legal Aid
