ABOUT ABA AND THE FOURTH CIRCUIT

Learn about the ABA Law Student Division Structure and Leadership.

ASL belongs to the Law Student Division of the ABA and is represented locally in the Fourth Circuit by our SBA President and Law School Division Representative. Other law schools in the Fourth Circuit include:

  • University of Richmond
  • Campbell University
  • College of William and Mary
  • Duke University
  • Regent University
  • North Carolina Central University
  • University of Virginia
  • University of North Carolina
  • Washington and Lee University
  • Wake Forest University
  • West Virginia University
  • University of South Carolina

*While Liberty University and the Charleston Law School also lie within the Fourth Circuit, their students are not members of the ABA because their schools are not accredited. Once accredited by the ABA, their students will be eligible for membership in the Fourth Circuit.

The Circuit schools meet twice a year to organize local events. All SBA Presidents and Law School Division Reps meet as an Assembly, once per year. A Board of Governors, the heads of each Circuit, meet several more times per year, and the four National Officers run the day to day business of the organization and represent the division to the entirety of the ABA. The LSD/ABA provides students many opportunities to increase their leadership skills and resumes. More information on how the LSD/ABA works and what each position entails is available at the LSD/ABA page.

At the annual meeting, representatives from all over the United States and its territories vote in national officers. SBA Presidents and ABA Representatives vote in these elections but other students may take this opportunity to influence how their SBA President or ABA Representative votes.

The Fall Roundtable brings together representatives from the 4th, 5th, and 6th Circuits (anywhere from Michigan to Florida and Virginia to Mississippi) to discuss SBA improvement, ABA national issues, and bar and career related issues.

The Spring Roundtable is a 4th Circuit exclusive meeting where more issues like those in the Fall Roundtable are discussed but on a circuit level. In addition, circuit level awards are given and the new circuit governor is elected. Again, the SBA President and ABA Representative vote in this election.
