The Writing Center at the Appalachian School of Law helps beginning and upper level students to sharpen the skills needed to write clearly and concisely, skills needed in law school and in the practice of law. To accomplish this, the Writing Center provides one-on-one confidential conferences to help students improve their written communication skills. Working with the students' drafts, writing consultant Jackie Davis and assistant tutors address English language issues such as syntax, paragraphing, organization, mechanics, and clarity. Students may bring to conferences any type of document, including legal memoranda, briefs, client letters, and journal articles.
The Writing Center does not address questions about legal analysis, citation, or research. Students should address questions of this nature to the professor with whom the question arises.
The Writing Center is open to all students who request conferences. Students may also be referred to the Writing Center by their professors. Official hours at the Center vary from semester to semester. Unofficial hours are by appointment. The Writing Center also has examples of troublespots, practice exercises, and links to grammar and legal writing websites.
