Rebecca Elswick, a native of Grundy, is a retired teacher for Buchanan County Schools. She is an adjunct instructor of writing and literature for Southwest Virginia Community College and the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. She is a teacher consultant for the UVA Wise Appalachian Writing Project. Her award-winning fiction and nonfiction has appeared in numerous publications. Her debut novel, Mama’s Shoes, was published in 2012. At ASL, Ms. Elswick offers support and guidance to individual students to help them achieve a strong foundation in legal writing, an essential requirement for a lawyer. She also communicates the activities and achievements of ASL and its students to the news media, spotlighting student participation in professional activities as well as their service to the community.
