UPDATE!

New ASL E-Mail Server
We have switched to a new mail server (system) as of 1:00pm on September the 29th. This change will help us in our fight against spam, spy ware, viruses, and other malicious things that get transmitted through e-mail.

To connect with Outlook follow these directions:

  • Open Microsoft Outlook
  • Click on tools
  • Click on E-Mail Accounts
  • Click Add a New E-Mail Account
  • Click on the round ball next to POP3
  • Click Next
  • Fill in the User Information with your name and your e-mail address
  • Fill in the Server Information with mail.asl.edu for both the Incoming Mail Server and the outgoing Mail Server
  • Put your username and the password that you supplied the Information Services Department
  • Click on More Settings
  • Click the Outgoing Server Tab
  • Put a check in the box beside My outgoing server (SMTP) requires Authentication
  • Click the Advanced tab
  • Put a check in the box beside both "This Server requires an encrypted Connection (SSL)"

  • Click Finish

ASL Wireless Network Project

The following instructions have been updated so that most people can connect to our wireless network. I would like to thank the students who pointed out the Microsoft Hotfix that makes this possible.

The wireless network could come down at any time without warning. We suggest that you use a wired connection for anything important.

In order to access the wirless network you must do the following:

  • Have Windows XP as your operating system.
  • Install all critical updates from www.windowsupdate.com, especially Windows XP Service Pack 2
  • Install the latest drivers available for your wireless card
  • Have a valid ASL network account
  • Install this hotfix from Microsoft.
Due to the strength of the security we are using for the wireless network, some older hardware will not be able to connect to it. If there are a significant number of students who can not access the system for this reason, we will consider reducing the security so they can connect.

To connect to the ASL_WiFi network:
  • If you have a wireless connection utility installed, such as the Intel Proset, right click it's icon and disable it and tell it to allow Windows to manage your wireless connection.
  • Open the Control Panel, double click Network Connections, and right click Wireless Network Connection and click View Available Wireless Networks.
  • Click Change Advanced Settings.
  • Click the Wireless Networks tab.
  • Make sure Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings is checked.
  • Click OK.
  • Right click Wireless Network Connection and click View Available Wireless Networks.
  • Select ASL_Wifi and click connect.
  • The Wireless Network Connection bubble will tell you that Windows was unable to find a certificate.
  • Click Change advanced settings.
  • Click the Wireless Networks tab.
  • In preferred networks, highlight ASL_WiFi and click Properties.
  • Click the Authentication Tab.
  • Change the EAP type to Protected EAP and click Properties.
  • Uncheck Validate Server Certificate.
  • At the bottom of the page, Check Enable Fast Reconnect.
  • Click Configure next to Authentication Method and uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password.
  • Click OK all the way out.
  • The Wireless Network Connection bubble will ask you to select a certificate or other credentials for connection. Click that bubble.
  • Enter your network username and password. DO NOT ENTER A LOGON DOMAIN.
  • You should now be connected to the ASL_WiFi network. If you continue to have problems, see Brian or Brandon in the IS Department.

Old News:

The hardware for the wireless has been installed.

We are currently testing the configuration and security of the wireless system. You may occassionally see the ASL_WiFi network available, but until we make the official announcement it is because of testing purposes.
