Fun Things To Do


Here are some of the many local activities that the region has to offer.

Parks
Poplar Gap Park: Located in Poplar gap, about 15 minutes from Grundy, this park features beautiful vistas, a real Caboose, swings and lots of space to wander around, have picnics and relax.

Kiwanis Park: Located in Royal City, 460 East (near Pizza Plus and Golden Charity Jewelers). Follow the swinging bridge to a picnic area, swing sets, slides, an old log cabin, and lots of space to roam around. Open spring, summer and fall.

Breaks Interstate Park: Located about 30 minutes from Grundy, in Breaks, Va. Open year-round for hiking, biking, eating, sightseeing in the beautiful mountains. Seasonally open for swimming, paddle-boats, horseback riding, camping and hotel accommodations. For more information, call 1-800-982-5122.

Lotito Park: Located in Bluefield, WV, about 1½ hours from Grundy. For more information, call 1-304-327-2448.

Critterville Park: Located in Richlands (about 30 to 40 minutes from Grundy), this park has picnic areas and modern play structures, including castles and swings. For more information, call Richland City Parks at 1-276-964-2575.

Sugar Hill Park: Located in St. Paul, VA (about an hour to hour and half from Grundy), this park has hiking, bicycling, fishing, canoeing on the Clinch River, and raft rentals. For more information, call 1-888-SWVAFUN (1-888-798-2386) or visit the website at http://www.sugarhillclinch.com/

Museums
Hands On! Regional Museum: Located in Johnson City, TN, about 2½ hours from Grundy. Call 1-423-434-4262 or visit www.handsonmuseum.org for more information.

Science Center of West Virginia: Located in Bluefield, WV, about 1½ from Grundy. A hands-on museum with activities for children. Call 1-304-325-8855 for more information.

Arts and Education
Grundy Community Arts Council: The Arts Council sponsors a wide variety of stage productions each year, including school performances. Law students receive a discount on tickets as do families.

Buchanan County Public Library: Located in Grundy, the public library has a wonderful children's librarian and a fun area for children to read and work puzzles or games. Children's activities include: Story Hour for 4 & 5 year olds (Tuesdays and Fridays from 10am - 11am); Toddler Time for 2 & 3 year olds (Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:30pm - 12pm, and Thursdays 6pm - 6:30pm); Babies and Books for children under the age of 2 (3rd Thursday of each month 2pm - 2:30pm); and Donuts and Dads for children under 5 and their fathers (3rd Saturday of each month from 10am - 10:30am). Historic Crab Tree Orchard: Historic museum and learning center featuring pioneer arts, crafts, and skills. http://www.craborchardmuseum.com/

Other Things to Note
YMCA: Located in Grundy, next to Buchanan General Hospital, the "Y" offers swimming during the summer months and Thursday morning gym space year-round for children under 13 years of age. Nursery also available. Call 935-8871 for more information.

Grundy Community Center (Theatre): The three-screen movie theater is located on the top level of the parking garage in downtown Grundy. Cheap ticket prices (compared to big cities) with Sunday matinees ( and even cheaper matinee ticket prices). This is a "first run" theatre.

Scouting: Buchanan County has a number of very active Boy and Girl Scout troops. For more information call Boy Scouts Area Employee, Jonathan Platt, at 935-8668.

Annalynn Stables: Interested in horseback riding? Annalynn stables is located about 15 minutes from Grundy.

Aggressive Skating: This action packed style of roller blading is available at a skating park in Pikeville, KY. It is directly across the street from the Pikeville YMCA. Admission is charged. Pads and a helmet are required, but may be rented there.

Grundy Women's Club: The Women's Club meets the second Wednesday of each month, September through May. This national club is primarily a service organization. Meetings consist of a catered lunch ($5 each), business meeting and speaker. There is a fee for becoming a member. Call Angie Mutter for more information: 935-5204.

Book Club: An informal group of readers from Grundy meet during lunch to discuss a wide variety of books chosen by the club members. Discussion is lead by the person who suggested that month's book. For more information contact Margaret Lawton at 935-5037 or Lisa Blackwell at 531-9734.

SVCC Community Chorus: The Chorus is a volunteer, non-audition chorus for musically-inclined adults, led by Joseph Trivett. It is an official SVCC class and can be for credit or just audited. Music ranges from classical to ballads, with at least two performances, in December and in May. The chorus usually participates in the SVCC Arts Festival in March. Christmas Lights: An enormous light display is available during the holiday season at the Bristol Motorspeedway in Bristol, TN. A fee is charged for admittance to this drive-through display. The Breaks Interstate Park also has a light display for which a fee is also charged.

Minor League Baseball: The Princeton Devil Rays play minor league ball in Princeton, WV, about 1½ hours from Grundy. For more information call 1-304-487-2000.

Buchanan County Bird Club:Bird watchers of Buchanan and surrounding counties participate in activities relating to bird watching. The monthly newsletter details current events. For more information please visit their website.
