MS. ANGELA DENICE DALES
Student

Angela Denice Dales was a life-long resident of Buchanan County. She graduated with a B.A. in History/Political Science and Creative Writing from Virginia Intermont College in 1992. She earned her M.S in Counselor Education from Radford University in 1999. While at Radford, Ms. Dales was a graduate assistant. Her enthusiasm for learning showed while at Virginia Intermont in her work as a tutor. She also served as an author for the campus newsletter, The Chronicle and Today and as an editor for the Moore Street Review. Ms. Dales was a student in the Worrell Honor's Program Abroad wherein she studied at the University of Munich in Munich, Germany. At the time of her death, Ms. Dales was a student at the Appalachian School of Law. She had earned the distinction of being on the Dean's List and had been elected as the treasurer of Phi Alpha Delta. Angela is survived by her daughter, Rebecca.

PROFESSOR THOMAS F. BLACKWELL
Associate Professor of Law

B.S., cum laude, Mathematics, University of Texas at Arlington, 1982; M.A., Philosophy, Duke University, 1986; J.D., with Highest Honors, Duke University School of Law, 1986. He is a member of the Order of the Coif, and was an editor and Style Editor for Law and Contemporary Problems. Professor Blackwell was an associate with Jenkins & Gilchrist, in Dallas, Texas; the managing partner of Blackwell & Bruning, L.L.P., in Dallas, Texas; and the president and shareholder of Thomas F. Blackwell, P.C., in Dallas, Texas. He also taught as a Legal Writing Instructor at Texas Wesleyan School of Law; and as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law. He published a book of legal forms on disk for Texas business entities for West Publishing Co., and published articles in Law & Contemporary Problems, The Journal of Corporation Law, The NYU Journal of Legislation and Public Policy, The Texas Independent Banker, and The Independent. His areas of interest included business organizations, intellectual property and technology law. Professor Blackwell also served on the CALI (Computer-Aided Law Instruction) Editorial Board, the Board of the Association of Legal Writing Directors, the board of Buchanan Neighbors United, and the Technology Committee of the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce. He maintained this web site and the web site for the Association of Legal Writing Directors. Not to be outdone by his more athletic colleagues, Professor Blackwell ran the Dallas White Rock Marathon in 1990, and again in 2001. Professor Blackwell taught Contracts, Intellectual Property, the Law Office Management Practicum, and Legal Process. He was a devoted father and husband. He is survived by his wife and (his words) "longtime best friend", Lisa, their daughter, Jillian, and their sons, Zeb and Zeke.

DEAN L. ANTHONY SUTIN
Dean and Associate Professor of Law

B.A., summa cum laude, Politics & Economics, Brandeis University, 1981; J.D., cum laude, Harvard Law School, 1984. Dean Sutin served as an assistant editor for the Harvard Environmental Law Review and the Harvard Journal on Legislation. Dean Sutin was a judicial law clerk for the United States District Court, Northern District of Texas. He was a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Hogan & Hartson, L.L.P. before accepting a position in the U.S. Department of Justice. At the Department, he served as Deputy Director and General Counsel of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services ("COPS"), as Deputy Associate Attorney General and Chief of Staff to the Associate Attorney General, and finally was appointed by Attorney General Reno to serve as Acting Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs. While in private practice, Dean Sutin served as acting general counsel for a national political party, chief counsel for a presidential campaign, litigation counsel for the Presidential Inaugural Committee, and trial and appellate counsel in many public interest, civil rights, and commercial litigation matters. He was editor of Introduction to Advocacy, published in the Washington University Law Quarterly, the Journal of Legislation, and Campaigns & Elections, and wrote the Supreme Court Watch column for the newsletter of the American Bar Association Section on State and Local Government Law. Dean Sutin taught Constitutional Law I & II. Dean Sutin was killed on January 16, 2002. A devoted husband and delighted father, Tony is survived by his wife Margaret Lawton and their children, Henry and Clara.

In Memory of

Following January 16, 2002, recognition of the gravity of loss and support for the families of those lost and for the ASL community poured in from around the country. Many organizations from the state of Virginia and from around the country voiced their support, including the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia ( Resolutions 383, 203, 204, 205), the ABA Council of the Section of Legal Education and Bar Admissions, the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Bar Association, the Roanoke Bar Association, the Harvard Law Faculty, Dean Robert C. Clark of Harvard Law School, and Congressman John Conyers, Jr. of Michigan. Additionally, the Class of 2002 planted three trees in front of the law school in remembrance of Ms. Dales, Professor Blackwell, and Dean Sutin.

As a testament to the impact their lives had on others, numerous organizations, awards, scholarships, fellowships, centers and roads have been named in memory of those lost, including:
