ASL Graduate Travis Lee Becomes One of Virginia’s Newest Judges
Grundy, VA (June 25, 2019) – Appalachian School of Law graduate Travis Lee was sworn in Friday as a new General District Court Judge in the 28th Judicial District of Virginia.
The investiture ceremony was held in the Smyth County General District Courtroom in Marion.
“It was thrilling for me to find out that the General Assembly had selected me,” Lee said of the legislative body’s decision earlier this year to appoint him to the 28th District position.
“We are so proud of Travis and his accomplishments,” said ASL Dean Sandra McGlothlin. “We have no doubt he will make an excellent judge and we look forward to seeing his future successes continue.”
Lee, the son of George and Pam Lee, of Saltville, Va., graduated from ASL in 2011. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.
“I’ve always been interested in the law and politics, so it was a natural path for me to take when I decided to go to law school,” Lee said.
He noted he chose ASL in part because it was a local school in the region and because of his good friend, now Del. Jeff Campbell graduated from ASL and recommended it to him.
Once at ASL, he said, he knew it was a good fit for him and he said he immediately became involved in and began to focus on trial advocacy.
He graduated and immediately began studying for the Virginia State Bar, which he passed later that same year. He first worked as a law clerk in the law offices of Frank Kilgore and in August 2012, opened his own practice in Abingdon until deciding to go to work with Campbell where he has practiced law until his appointment to fill the judgeship. During that time, his practice of the law has been predominantly focused on general practice with an emphasis on criminal law and family law.
“I am excited about and looking forward to the new job,” Lee said. “I am ready to go and to get to work.”
