Appalachian School of Law offers several certificate programs as a key feature of our academic program. Students can complete a certificate program to enhance their J.D. degree and concentrate on a particular area of interest. Our certificate programs support diverse career paths and are offered in growing fields that provide our students promising futures.
Each certificate program requires students to complete the designated list of required courses and a minimum number of hours from a list of elective courses. All certificate programs require students to maintain a 3.0 (B) average in all courses that satisfy the certificate requirements. This includes courses that are part of the certificate program but are also required for graduation. Additionally, each certificate program requires completion of a practical or writing component in addition to the required.
ASL’s certificates are awarded to students who fulfill the requirements established for each program. Students who earn Certificates will have this credential noted on their permanent academic records.
Currently, there are four available J.D. Certificates: Civil Litigation, Criminal Law & Litigation, Family Law, and Natural Resources Law. The checklists for fulfilling the requirements to earn a J.D Certificate in each of these programs can be found in Appendix K (Certificate Program Checklists) to the ASL Catalog & Student Handbook.
