During Appalachian School of Law’s Dean’s Welcome, Dean Western offered the incoming 1L class a message centered on three ideas: ask for help when you need it, be ready when your moment comes, and remain open-minded enough to keep learning.
“As you begin this journey, don’t be afraid to ask for help, be ready when your moment comes, and always remain open to learning. One of the greatest barriers to discovering the truth is assuming you already have it.”
Western told students that both law school and the practice of law require humility. No one has all the answers, and success often depends on recognizing when to seek help, learning from others, and preparing for opportunities before they arrive.
He also encouraged students to remain willing to reconsider what they think they know.
That willingness to listen, learn, and change your mind when the facts warrant it, he explained, is an important part of becoming a good lawyer.
The message served as an early reminder to ASL’s newest students that legal education is about more than mastering material. It also requires curiosity, preparation, perspective, and a willingness to continue growing throughout the journey.
