Today, the flag at Appalachian School of Law flies at half-staff as we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, the families forever changed, and the first responders, members of our military, and countless others whose courage and service followed that day.
In a message to the ASL community this morning, Dean Western reflected on his own memories of September 11. He was teaching at the United States Air Force Academy when the attacks occurred and remembers sitting with a student who was desperately trying to reach his father, who worked at the Pentagon.
“I have never forgotten that moment…the fear and helplessness of a young man who simply wanted to know whether his father was safe.”
Dean Western shared that the events of September 11 shaped the lives and service of an entire generation, while leaving lessons that extend far beyond military service — reminders of the fragility of life, the importance of our relationships with one another, and our responsibility to serve something greater than ourselves.
Today, we remember those we lost, those who ran toward danger to help others, and all who have carried the consequences of that day in the 25 years since.
May we never forget.
