ASL 3L Students Advance to Semifinals in Client Counseling Competition

Three 3L students from Appalachian School of Law recently advanced to the semifinal round of the regional Client Counseling Competition (CCC), demonstrating excellence in practical lawyering skills and client advocacy.

Raneka Williams, Lindsey Musick, and Angela Diaz competed in the regional round of the competition sponsored by the American Bar Association Law Student Division. The team was coached by Professor Alan J. Oxford, II.

Unlike traditional appellate advocacy competitions, the Client Counseling Competition focuses on the foundation of legal practice: the attorney-client relationship. Teams are presented with a hypothetical legal scenario and must conduct a simulated initial client interview. Judges evaluate participants on their ability to:

  • Build rapport and establish trust
  • Identify and clarify the client’s concerns
  • Ask strategic and effective questions
  • Clearly explain legal options and next steps
  • Demonstrate professionalism and ethical awareness

Advancing to the semifinal round reflects the team’s preparation, poise, and communication skills. As third-year students preparing to enter the profession, their performance highlights the strength of ASL’s experiential learning approach.

We commend Raneka, Lindsey, and Angela for their hard work and thank Professor Oxford for his mentorship and leadership in guiding the team.
