Appalachian School of Law proudly congratulates Class of 2003 alumna Suzy Gibson Shearer as she prepares to take office as Pike County Judge Executive, marking a historic and deeply personal milestone for her family and community.
Shearer’s election carries extraordinary significance in Eastern Kentucky. Her mother, Karen Gibson, previously served in the same role and became the first woman ever elected to the position. With Suzy’s election, she now becomes only the second woman to hold the title, continuing a remarkable family legacy of leadership and public service in Pike County.
The moment represents more than political achievement. It is a story of generational leadership rooted in Appalachia — one that highlights the lasting impact of strong women in public service and the importance of representation in rural communities.
Adding even more meaning to the accomplishment is the role of Suzy’s son, Mason, throughout the campaign. Mason actively worked alongside his mother during the election season and was able to cast his very first vote for her, creating a powerful three-generation story of civic engagement, family legacy, and Appalachian pride.
From Karen Gibson’s groundbreaking service years ago to Suzy Gibson Shearer’s historic election today, the family’s story reflects the enduring values of leadership, perseverance, and commitment to community that continue to shape the Appalachian region.
ASL is proud to celebrate Suzy Gibson Shearer and the generations of leadership surrounding this historic moment.
