Purple Heart Day, August 7, 2025

To the Appalachian School of Law Community,

Today, on Purple Heart Day, we pause to reflect on the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed in combat while defending our nation. The Purple Heart Medal, first established by General George Washington on August 7, 1782, stands as the oldest military award still presented to American service members. It remains a solemn symbol of bravery, service, and devotion to country .

As a retired Colonel in the United States Air Force, this day holds deep personal significance for me. I have served alongside soldiers who have borne the physical and emotional scars of battle. Many of them continued to serve with honor, embodying a resilience that can only be described as extraordinary. To them—and to all who have received the Purple Heart—I offer my deepest respect and enduring gratitude.

At the Appalachian School of Law, we are proud to count veterans, service members, and military families among our students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Your stories strengthen our community, and your sacrifices inspire us to lead with integrity and purpose. Law, like military service, demands courage, discipline, and a commitment to justice—values that unite us all.

Let us take this day to remember and honor those who have given so much. Let us also reaffirm our duty, as future attorneys and advocates, to serve with the same courage and commitment our Purple Heart recipients have shown.

With respect and gratitude,

Colonel David J. Western (Ret.)
Dean, Appalachian School of Law
