Appalachian Women in Law Society President shares a message honoring the power, resilience, and impact of women in the legal profession.
During Women’s History Month, the Appalachian School of Law community is proud to share a powerful reflection from Appalachian Women in Law Society (AWILS) President Raneka Williams.
In her message, Williams reflects on the strength, resilience, and diversity of women across all walks of life and emphasizes the important role women play in shaping the legal profession and advocating for justice.
As a woman who stands beside you, who sees you, and who is continually inspired by each and every one of you, this month, we do not just observe history. We celebrate the living, breathing, beautiful force that is womanhood — in every form it takes. We celebrate us.
We celebrate the mother who pours everything she has into her family and still finds a way to pour into herself. We celebrate the entrepreneur who bet on her vision when no one else would. We celebrate the student who is the first in her family to reach for something new and does so with trembling, courageous hands.
We celebrate the woman in the boardroom and the woman in the classroom. The woman in the hospital, the courtroom, the kitchen, the studio, and the fields.
We celebrate every woman who has ever been told she was too loud, too soft, too much, or not enough — and showed up anyway. We celebrate every woman, of every background, every faith, every story — because every single one of you belongs in this celebration.
As women, our road has not been easy. We’ve studied harder, worked longer, advocated louder — and we transformed each profession from the inside out. Womanhood is not one thing. It is infinite. It is resilient. It is powerful beyond measure.
As women in the legal profession, we are not just practicing a profession — we are protecting people. We are rewriting narratives. We are making sure that justice does not have a single face, a single accent, or a single story.
Our diversity is not just our strength — it is our superpower. When women from every background, every culture, every walk of life stand together in this profession, we do not just change law. We change lives.
Williams closes her reflection with words of encouragement from remarkable women who have helped shape history:
“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” — Alice Walker
“You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage… overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.” — Michelle Obama
“When you learn, teach. When you get, give.” — Dr. Maya Angelou
“It took me quite a long time to develop a voice, and now that I have it, I am not going to be silent.” — Madeleine Albright
“The question isn’t who’s going to let me; it’s who’s going to stop me.” — Ayn Rand
“We must believe in ourselves or no one else will believe in us.” — Rosalyn Yalow
Williams concludes with a message of unity and encouragement:
“Happy Women’s Empowerment Month. Now let’s go change the world — together.”
