Appalachian School of Law Recently Hosted its Annual 1L Oral Argument Tournament

Appalachian School of Law recently hosted its annual 1L Oral Argument Tournament, a foundational experience for first-year students as they begin developing the skills essential to legal advocacy.

This year’s problem focused on the enforceability of a non-compete agreement under Michigan law. More than 70 first-year students competed in the opening rounds, with over 30 students and faculty volunteering their time to serve as judges and bailiffs throughout the competition.

The final round, held on April 10, was presided over by Dean Wilson as Chief Judge, joined by Nathan Lowell, Jessica Gunter, Zyeda Cole, and additional members of the ASL community.

The Oral Argument Tournament is a significant rite of passage for ASL students, requiring them to master case law and the record, think critically under pressure, and respond to rigorous questioning. These experiences help build the confidence and practical skills that will carry them into their legal careers.

Congratulations to this year’s winners, Michael Rowe and Kailyn Cross, and to runners-up Tatumn Damron and Riley Petroski.

Special thank you to 1L student, Lane Clark for these images.
