Suzan E. Moore is a dedicated Executive, Attorney, and nonprofit Board Member, with 20+ years of progressive leadership experience focusing on Human Resources, Environmental, Sustainability, Safety, and Health initiatives. As a resourceful problem solver and senior advisor, Ms. Moore possesses demonstrated expertise in M&A, ethics, safety, health, environmental compliance, executive compensation, employee benefit plans, general human resources, employee turnover reductions, and labor relations, including responding to unions. She is an articulate and collaborative communicator, known for establishing a culture of excellence within diverse organizations.
In 2020, Ms. Moore joined the Appalachian School of Law (ASL) as Executive Director, Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP), and worked with leaders of ASL, Ballad Health, and Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business, to establish an MLP program for the delivery of free legal services to Ballad’s low-income patients in northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia.
In 2016, Ms. Moore was named Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel focusing on Human Resources, Safety, and Environmental functions for Contura Energy, Inc., and in 2018 she was elected by Contura’s Board of Directors as Senior Vice President, Administration and Chief Human Resources Officer. Ms. Moore led Contura Energy’s HR, payroll, labor relations, security, safety, and environmental operations. She also chaired the Fiduciary Committee directing benefits administration. She participated on the Contura leadership team that completed the acquisition of a larger entity, up-listed the company on the NYSE in 2018, and achieved significant improvements in employee turnover.
From 2003 to 2016, Ms. Moore progressed within positions of increasing leadership for Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. as Associate General Counsel, Assistant Vice President of Legal, Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of Human Capital and Regulatory Affairs, Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of HR, Benefits, and Safety, and Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of HR, Benefits, and Safety. She assisted in managing an IPO and 4 large acquisitions, including two public company mergers. In 2016, Ms. Moore championed the setup of Contura Energy. By 2019, Contura had approximately 4,500 employees operating 30 mines, 12 preparation plants, and a majority interest in an ocean vessel loading facility, Dominion Terminal Associates (DTA), exporting 11M tons of met coal to customers in 23 countries and generating $2B+ in annual revenue.
Prior to her tenure with Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., Ms. Moore served as Associate General Counsel for Pittston Coal Company (a subsidiary of Brinks, Inc.), Assistant General Counsel for Westmoreland Coal Company, and Associate Attorney for Penn, Stuart, Eskridge & Jones.
Ms. Moore was educated at the University of Virginia and holds a Juris Doctor from the School of Law, in addition to a Bachelor of Arts, with highest honors, from the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and The Pride of the Southland Band. She is a Licensed Attorney in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, and is AV Peer Review Rated (Martindale-Hubbell).
While progressing her career, Ms. Moore has served on numerous boards. She is currently a Board of Trustees and Executive Committee Member for Girls Inc. of Bristol. She has also previously served as Board Member for the United Way of Bristol and the United Way of Southwest Virginia, Board Chair and Board Member for the American Red Cross Mountain Empire Chapter, Board Vice President and Board Member for William King Museum of Art, Board Member for the Energy and Mineral Law Foundation, and Board Member for the Virginia State Bar, Young Lawyers Conference. Her leadership and dedication to the people who call upon the American Red Cross have been recognized with a Leadership Award for Virginia, and Girls Inc. of Bristol recognized her outstanding contributions to the organization with the Steve Everhart Service Award for 2021.
