It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of James W. McGlothlin — a visionary entrepreneur, philanthropist, and steadfast supporter of the Appalachian School of Law.
A native of Buchanan County, Virginia, Mr. McGlothlin co-founded United Coal Company (UCC) in 1970 in Grundy. Under his leadership, UCC became a cornerstone of the coal industry and a driving force behind the region’s economic growth. Though his ventures expanded far beyond our mountains, Jim remained deeply rooted in the community that shaped him.
As part of his lifelong commitment to Southwest Virginia, he co-founded both The McGlothlin Foundation and The United Company Charitable Foundation. Through these philanthropic efforts, he supported countless educational and community-based initiatives — including the Appalachian School of Law.
Mr. McGlothlin and his wife, Frances, were also renowned art collectors and benefactors of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, William & Mary, VCU Health, and the Mountain Mission School in Grundy, where he had volunteered since the 1960s.
Governor Glenn Youngkin called him “a giant in business and philanthropy who embodied the American dream.” His life’s work continues to shape the future of Appalachia and beyond.
Jim McGlothlin’s legacy is one of vision, generosity, and deep-rooted dedication to the people of this region. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this time of loss.
